On May 14-16, 2024, the World Health Organization’s National Oxygen Scale-up Framework Meeting is taking place in Senegal, a very relevant global event where the necessary components for effective planning and scale-up of access to medical oxygen will be discussed.
Oxygen is an essential medicine that has no substitute and is highly effective in saving lives in the context of respiratory diseases, which are a leading cause of death worldwide, and is vital for safe and effective surgery, as well as for maternity, neonatal and trauma services.
Despite this, equitable access to oxygen has long been an overlooked element in health system planning, a situation made more relevant by its lack of access during the Covid-19 pandemic.
